Cobra leverages virtual machines for their benefits including machine code generation, garbage collection, standard libraries and 3rd party libraries and tools. Cobra currently runs on DotNet and NovellMono. There is a partially completed back-end for JVM as well as Objective-C (although the latter is not a virtual machine).
